Clare Louise Mariconda
24th June 1982 - 17th September 2023
Clare’s brain tumour shrunk her world. Losing her driving licence made it hard to leave the house, socialise, or run errands. Her bike restored the independence she cherished. Reconnecting with friends, exploring her surroundings through active travel, and reclaiming control was her two-finger salute to the meningioma trying to steal her freedom.
Liberato, Antonio's dad, relied on his. An immigrant, he came to England in 1961 in search of opportunities for his family that his home could not offer. His first purchase in England was a bike. It enabled him to get to work and to escape the abuse he would encounter. 1960's England was not as welcoming as it is now he tells people. His bike literally kept him alive he jokes.
Bikes are more than mechanical devices. Antonio feels the emotional and physical support they give him from his grief everyday. His wise and beloved wife, Clare, who died of cancer in 2023 knew this before he did. Always telling him to get out on his bike, she appreciated that each little investment in himself enabled Antonio to keep supporting her the best he could.
